Let Your Hands Speak of Love

A vintage handkerchief was selected for this project to signify an intimate, yet utilitarian cloth. In the past, it was thought that a handkerchief could contain the magical powers of the user’s tears. Sewn onto the surface are small handprints [on paper] with a placement to allow small hearts to form. The “hand” is a metaphor for action, care and possession. Layered words are repeated along the border using wood and metal type. This process was selected since it is the opposite of instant gratification. Hand stitching, inked lines completes the deliberately decorated surface.
